Our approach
Skincare can be simpler. We bring together ingredients our grandmothers knew, plants from the veld and today’s formulation knowledge, and make them by hand in small batches in De Rust.
Karoo sheep tallow
Tallow has a long history in traditional skincare. It’s rich in the same kinds of fats found in our skin’s own natural oils, which is why it sinks in so comfortably, softening the skin and helping it hold on to moisture.
We filter every batch of Karoo sheep tallow by hand. It’s a slow process: one batch can take up to a week before it’s ready to use. That’s also why you won’t smell like a ‘skaap tjoppie’ when you use our products. On its own, our tallow has only a faint, buttery scent. In our scented balms, you’ll smell the essential oils and plants instead.
Tallow is the base of our balms and creams, blended with carefully chosen botanical oils. Not every product contains it, and each product page tells you clearly whether it does.
From the veld

Hand-harvested herbs
We harvest kapokbos and asbos from the veld around De Rust, then dry and grind them ourselves.

Slow infusions
Herbs and flowers are infused in oil for four to eight hours, depending on the plant. Comfrey turns the oil green; St John’s wort and cayenne turn Pynsalf a warm red.

Botanical oils
From Kalahari melon and baobab to rosehip and marula, each oil is chosen for how it feels and what it brings to the finished product.
Fewer, better products
You don’t need an overflowing bathroom shelf or an elaborate routine to care for your skin. We make fewer products, each with a clear purpose, so every one earns its place in your day.
We never use synthetic fragrances. Our scents come from essential oils and real plant extracts, like real vanilla in Sluimer, used at low levels. Some products, like Die Kern, have no added scent at all.
