Tallow has been used in skincare for generations. It’s rich in the same kinds of fats found in our skin’s own natural oils, which is why it sinks in so comfortably. We filter every batch by hand, and it can take up to a week before it’s ready to use. Read more in Our Approach.

No, you won’t smell like a ‘skaap tjoppie’. We filter every batch of Karoo sheep tallow slowly by hand, so on its own it has only a faint, buttery scent. Our scented balms smell of their essential oils and plant extracts, like vanilla in Sluimer. Die Kern has no added scent, so there you may notice that soft, buttery note.

A little goes a long way. Warm a small amount between your palms and it sinks in comfortably, especially on slightly damp skin after a bath or shower.

Start with one product for the part you’d most like to care for:

• For your face: Nagroom Gesig, our most-loved night balm.
• For your body: one of our body balms, like Sluimer with real vanilla. Choose the scent you like best.
• For the whole family: Genesende Balsem, a practical everyday balm for dry, rough spots and life’s little einas.

Short, simple ingredient lists, with no synthetic fragrances and no fillers. Our balms are made without water, so they contain no preservatives or stabilisers. The Dagroom day cream contains water, so it has a gentle preservative to keep it safe. Every product page lists every ingredient.

Die Kern is our simplest balm: just Karoo sheep tallow and castor oil, with no added scent. If your skin is very sensitive, try a little on a small area first.

• Die Kern: gentle enough for babies.
• Sluimer: from six months.
• Genesende Balsem: from 8 months.
• Our other body balms, Gegrond, Vars Bries and In Bot, are suitable for children over a year.

Keep them in a cool, dry place with the lid closed, and use clean, dry fingers or a spoon. Our balms, oils, lip balm and body polish are best used within 12 months of opening. The Dagroom day cream contains water, so use it within 6 months of opening. Balms soften in heat and firm up in the cold, and they will melt if left in the sun. If your tin melts, simply let it firm up again.

Our products are handmade in small batches without stabilisers, so the texture can vary slightly from batch to batch and with the weather. This is natural and not a fault.

Ingredients from plants and animals, used as close to their original form as possible. We don’t use synthetic fragrances, silicones or parabens.

Most of our balms and creams do, and each product page says clearly whether it contains tallow. The Gesigreiniger cleanser is tallow-free, and the Ester Natuurlik soaps are made with beef tallow.
