Bakuchiol vs Retinol: The Gentle Yet Powerful Alternative

For decades, retinol has been praised as the gold standard for anti-aging skincare. But in recent years, bakuchiol has emerged as a plant-based alternative that delivers similar benefits — without the irritation and sensitivity many experience with retinol.
Here’s what the science says.
What Retinol Does in the Skin
Retinol (a Vitamin A derivative) is converted into retinoic acid, which binds to receptors in the skin to stimulate collagen and cell turnover, which helps:
Smooth fine lines and wrinkles
Improve uneven skin tone
Refine texture
But clinical studies have consistently shown side effects in many users: redness, peeling, dryness, and increased sensitivity to UV light. This is why dermatologists usually recommend introducing retinol slowly and only at night.
What Bakuchiol Is & How It Works
Bakuchiol is a meroterpene compound extracted from the Psoralea corylifolia (babchi) plant. Unlike retinol, it doesn’t belong to the Vitamin A family — but studies suggest it activates similar genetic pathways involved in collagen and elastin production.
The science:
A 2014 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science showed bakuchiol can regulate gene expression in skin in the same way as retinol, leading to increased collagen production.
A 2018 double-blind clinical study published in the British Journal of Dermatology compared bakuchiol (0.5% twice daily) to retinol (0.5% once daily) over 12 weeks. Results? Both significantly reduced wrinkles and pigmentation, but bakuchiol caused far less scaling, stinging, and dryness.
